Neuromuscular Dentistry
San Francisco's Neuromuscular Dentist
What is neuromuscular dentistry?
- Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on the patient’s bite. A good bite involves a working relationship between the jaw joints, muscles, and the teeth. If any one of these mechanisms does not function correctly, the bite may become misaligned. With a misaligned bite, the muscles in your jaws work overtime to align your teeth when you bite. This causes tension in your jaws and the muscles. With time, a misaligned bite may cause other health problems such as TMJ and TMD. Neuromuscular dentistry is focused on fixing the bite, to resolve problems associated with a misaligned bite.
What are the symptoms associated with someone who may need neuromuscular dentistry?
Some of the symptoms of a misaligned bite are:
- TMJ
- TMD
- Facial pain
- Headaches/dizziness
- Neck pain
- Popping of jaw
- Ringing of the ears
- Crowed teeth
- Damage to fillings
- Grinding of the teeth
- Loose teeth
- Loss of feeling in arms
- Receding gums
- Shoulder pain
- Sensitivity of teeth
What treatments are available through neuromuscular dentistry?
- Coronoplasty, also referred to as equilibration, is a procedure that reshapes the enamel of your teeth to correct the bite. Dr. Bernstein uses porcelain veneers together with neuromuscular dentistry to reshape your smile and improve your bite.
Full-mouth reconstruction realigns the bite by making certain teeth higher or lower so your bite comes together more naturally. This also provides more structural support for your jaw.
